On Friday, June 2, the Bureau of Labor Statistics published a report which included preliminary national unemployment numbers for May. According to the report, the national unemployment rate rose from 3.4 percent in April to 3.7 percent in May.
Despite the rise in unemployment rate, the nation’s total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 339,000 jobs. The largest gains were seen in the professional and business services (+64,000), government (+56,000), health care (+52,000), construction (+25,000), transportation (+24,000), and social assistance (+22,000).
